Talking Stick

A towering 40-foot metal sculpture frames the new Talking Stick Resort pool, creating a breathtaking focal point for any drought-tolerant landscape. This homage to the Ocotillo, a native plant of the Southwest and a protected species in Arizona, celebrates its unique beauty and cultural heritage. Its striking silhouette, with slender spiny stems that rise dramatically like a natural fountain, has inspired admiration and utility for generations.

The Ocotillo has its’ roots deep in Native American traditions. The Cahuilla Indians turned its flowers into a refreshing summer drink and ground its seeds into flour for cakes. The Hualapai used its powdered roots to soothe swollen feet, while the Papago transformed its nectar into a sweet, candylike treat. Its sturdy, spined stems once provided material for fences and huts, and its structure offers nesting sites for birds and wildlife.

As an art installation, this sculpture pays tribute to Ocotillo’s resilient spirit, highlighting its role in desert landscaping, cultural history, and natural beauty.
